Japan, actually! I know my name probably doesn’t sound Japanese... haha. It’s always kind of stood out, compared to my friends. What about you?

The states. I was raised in Nantucket, which is a small island off the side of Massachusetts... But I'm living in New York City right now for school.

New York! Really? Wow... that’s amazing! I’ve always wanted to visit. It’s in so many stories and plays and poems...! I’ve always wanted to see it. I’m kind of jealous!

I am! In fact, I founded a literature club at my school. Literature is my passion! So much so I knew I wanted to share it with others, and help them find new ways to express themselves.

[She can't help but let her small smile grow, turning a little bit more towards Monika.]

That's really cool. You're probably in... high school, right, or just starting college? Is that what you want to study?

[Propping her elbow on the table, she leans her face into her palm.]

That's actually what I do. I'm going for my MFA in creative writing.

Starting college! I just graduated high school recently, actually.

[ she bites her lip. ]

You’re, like... doing exactly what I want to do, yeah! What’s it like? Can you tell me about it?

I won't say it's easy, but... It's definitely rewarding if you can put in the effort. I've learned a lot since I started. It's been a really amazing journey.

[She's curious, though.]

What college are you going to?

... would you believe I got accepted to Tokyo University?

[ tucks her hair behind her ear, the motion shy ]

It was my dream school. I’ve wanted to go my whole life. I’ve heard that people in the west have actually heard of it? Though... I’ve never had a chance to ask anyone till now!

[She nods.]

I have heard of it. That's really impressive! You must be excited to get started there.

I worked really hard to get out of where I was, you know? I was finally going to head someplace far away, and learn everything I ever wanted to learn, see everything I wanted to see...

[ there's a wistful note, and she glances around the room, some of the fire leaking out of her. ]

... now we're here. Wherever this place is... fate can be kinda cruel, huh?

Well... That just means we'll have to find the way out of here really quick, right? If we got in, then there must be a way out.

[She's more nervous about it than she sounds, but she wants to at least seem optimistic.]
