[She gets the feeling this might also be a secret, but.]

Work. [And the way he says it is so confident like it's actually that simple.] Sometimes my job takes me different places.

[He's aware he also never really told Beck what he does, but...he'll sacrifice that secret for the sake of others.]

And your job was...?

[He swirls his drink around a bit in the glass...]

I work for a private detective firm.

...You know, that actually makes sense.

[A beat, and then—]

I mean, not to sound all surprised, just - you're kind of young for it. [...] But it lines up with... I don't know. The way you seem.

I'm twenty-two. [Said in a bored sort of tone, like he thinks that means something.] It's not that young, is it?

...Okay, so my primary knowledge about that might come from detective novels, but - it seemed like it to me, at least.

[She shrugs.]

Not that it's a bad thing. Isn't it kind of a compliment for someone to say, you seem young to do this specific thing? Like... You accomplished it sooner than I would have thought someone would. That kind of thing.

To be fair, I had an in with someone I met last year. [So is it an accomplishment? He doesn't know.] College seemed meaningless and I took the job. That's why I dropped out.

[He drains his glass.] It's only been about a year. Maybe a little less.

[uncurtained]

That's... pretty cool, honestly.

[It would probably be even more cool if she wasn't still freaking out.]

What kind of stuff did you investigate?

[crashout]

[He doesn't answer right away because he's turning to pour another drink. He's also pulling what appears to be three dice out of his hands, rolling them in his palm before rolling them on the countertop/top of the bar/whatever. He looks at the numbers for a split-second before scooping up the dice. For all intents and purposes, he appears to be fidgeting with them in his hand.]

Stuff the city police force didn't have the capacity to deal with. Organ-trafficking rings. Religious cults. [Another roll of the dice.] Disappearances. Things like that.

She watches, a little curious, as he rolls the dice. When he speaks, though... Her eyes widen, and when the description has finished, it's not hard to see the concern in her face. She's getting the idea that he might pull away if she puts it into words, though, so:]

So that's why you seemed... kind of used to this sort of thing, then?

[crashout]

[Luckily he's not looking at her face, so that helps. Or, well, that's not true. He catches a glimpse of it and refuses to look closer because that's just how things are. Beck hasn't been terrible and maybe he owes her some kind of explanation given he just brought her along and traumatized her. He feels...bad, in a way, because he should have thought it through more and been more prepared.

But he can't change that now.]

Close to it, yeah. [He can terrorize her with information about what he was doing before this later.] Ghosts is new territory even for me though.

...At least we both had ghost free lives before this. Too bad it didn’t last.

Is Carlos a detective, too?

No. He's a firefighter. [That was easy enough to answer, and he doesn't seem bothered about telling her that.]

[She thinks about it for a moment.]

He does seem like the type. But... You had to work together for something?

[crashout]

The heroic type? Yeah. [He shakes his head.] It was kind of circumstantial. I didn't go into this knowing we'd meet.
