Maybe. [ dick tilts his head a bit ] But going by what we've heard, H's dead brother clearly wasn't part of the group that came back. I broke into a room earlier this week-- a clinic-- and got my own little undead experience, too.

[She blinks, clearly curious.]

—What? What happened?

We had to reassemble a corpse. A woman, subject they named "M". Cause of death was dismemberment. After I sutured her back together, she sort of came back to life for a little bit.

Jesus christ...

[She takes a breath, concerned.]

Did she say anything?

Knew it was gonna happen the second we read that we had to put her back together and it still caught me by surprise. [ but: ] She didn't say anything I could understand, but when she grabbed me, I got some kind of... vision, I guess.

What kind of vision?

First, a red orb trying to escape an exorcism circle and separating in two when it succeeded; then a white one going from an unidentifiable dead body to a living one. It fits what Kagachi and the rest found when they went exploring-- our demons are multiplying every time we strike them down, and roles just... pass onto the next person.

[ there's a beat-- ]

Which makes you wonder what we are, exactly.

[There’s a small pause as she frowns.]

What we are...?

What gave us these powers. Where they come from. Just what was the previous group up to.

If the red orb is supposed to be a demon... Do you think the white orb is supposed to represent a different kind of being, or something else?

Could be a different kind of being. That it seeks out a new body when the first one perishes at least implies it's mildly parasitic in nature.

... Sorry. [ he looks a little awkward ] It's only speculation. It could be some kind of magic that simply seeks a host at all costs?

...Pretty much everything about this place is going to freak me out in some way. You don't have to censor yourself, or anything.

[She tries to keep her tone light as she says that, but.]

It's not about censoring myself. But I'm-- [ hmm. ] There's no way not to make it sound insulting, but you're involved, so sometimes I forget you're... not used to this stuff.

The part where I admit I'd be coddling you if I did is what might come off as insulting.

I don't really have a choice on that, do I? I mean - whether or not I know about what's happening here, it's still going to be happening, whether it's too much or not.

That doesn't mean you can't take a break from hearing about it.

I can't say it wouldn't be nice, but - considering the stakes...
