Not so much personally... but there are a lot of villains who use some form of mind control. And... there was a pretty intense incident about-- [ he blinks ] Five and a half years ago, now.
About five years ago, using mind control, the bad guys-- the Light-- used six well-known superheroes to attack a far-off corner of the galaxy for sixteen hours, putting Earth on an intergalactic spotlight unbeknownst to us. The invasion was... insidious. A few different races infiltrated with aid from the Light, and worked at taking us down from the inside. Human trafficking and experimentation were the main target as aliens tried to track down exactly what it is that made the heroes super-- a potential in humans they called a "meta-gene". We've since identified the meta-gene as a strand of DNA in certain humans that, when exposed to great physical trauma, triggers the activation of superpowers. We're still... looking into details, to help the kidnapped victims deal with their new sets of powers.
[ he. stops, for a second. ]
Sorry, that got-- way more detailed than you needed.
Yeah. [ it's quiet, and he leans a bit more on the railing ] Yeah, we did. Told you I was taking a leave of absence, right? I wouldn't have tried to do that if things were still dire.
[ but he also told her his best friend died, so she can put two and two together ]

[ he hums, a bit ]
I ... don't want this kind of thing to happen to anyone. But it's almost worse knowing how scared she was.

[That doesn't sound fun for anyone, but especially for someone like Monika.]

[ i hate comics. ]

[comics are truly bad]

[ huh. a while. ]

[Her tone is curious, but there's concern mixed in, too. All the same:]
I'm glad it's never happened to you.

[ it's. a bit dry, but then he smiles a bit ]
You and me both. ... Hopefully it stays that way.

[She looks openly surprised for a few moments, before:]
I'm guessing you got the whole War of the Worlds situation under control, at least...? If it was that long ago.

[ that's. it. that's all he says on that he just casually drops that by ]

[But it's a lot to take in, and she thinks it over before responding.]
But... You did fight off the aforementioned alien invasion, right?

[And her tone implies she remembers all of that, not just the leave of absence.]
You're right, you don't seem like the type.

What gave me away?

[She laughs despite herself.]
Maybe, but I think we’re all pretty lucky to have that problem around.

[ and it's teasing enough, but then he tilts his head and hums at her comment ]
I sure hope so.

Harsh. I'll have to remember that.

Ha. You planning to hold a grudge on me?
